Sights while geocaching around town

Spent yesterday geocaching around UNR and Spanish Springs, just wanted to share a few of the non-geocaching photographs I took.

Just click on the photographs to enlarge them.

Basque Monument and downtown Reno…the day started cold, damp and breezy.  My fingers and nose were cold for the first five geocaches.

The early morning grey chill opened up to a bright sunny late morning and afternoon!  I headed out to Spanish Springs to collect more geocaches…below are a few sparrows that kept me company along the way.

There’s an old ranch out in Spanish Springs…this is the part that they haven’t turned into a housing development yet…I’m hoping they never do. Great place to walk around with your dogs, bird watch, and geocache!

Weekend at St. Mary Louise Hospital, Virginia City, NV

P1150466

St. Mary’s Hospital (Arts Center), looking down Six Mile Canyon with Sugarloaf to the left.

Spent two nights at the old haunted St. Mary Louise Hospital, now an arts and retreat center, with 18 friends and new friends.  After everyone arrived and claimed their rooms, we had a pizza dinner with cast iron s’mores for dessert. We then all went to the third floor’s conference room for a game of Cards Against Humanity.  Haven’t laughed that hard in ages, felt great. Spent the rest of the night into the morning investigating the building. Saturday I made eggs and bacon for everyone then we all went our seperate ways…some to Carson City other up the hill to roam around Virginia City. We all met back up at the Washoe Club then back to the St. Mary’s for a lasagna dinner and more investigating. After cleaning up after ourselves those of us still there had breakfast at The Palace, then we parted ways until our next meet-up.

Built in 1875 as a Catholic Hospital ran by the Daughters of Charity until 1897, then as a County Hospital until 1940’s.

Woke up to freezing fog on both Saturday and Sunday, the rest of the post are photographs from around the property.

The Preston Castle Gargoyle

I love gargoyles. Period. So I was all a’giddy when I looked up at the bell tower of the Preston Castle and saw one surviving gargoyle (i.e.: still had his head attached). One other fact. I love crows and ravens…beautiful birds with great sense of humor. :) Guess who had a nest up there with the gargoyles?

Can you see him way up there on the back right?

Preston Castle ~ Preston School of Industry ~ 1st Paracon benefit

Last weekend I joined my sister and two other members of the Northern Nevada Ghost Hunters on my very first Paracon hosted by the Castle Spirits Paranormal group. It was held at the Preston School of Industry (i.e. Reform School for boys) which had the cornerstone laid in 1890 and opened in 1894. All the proceeds from the paracon went towards the preservation and rehabilitation of the Preston Castle. IT WAS AWESOME! While the speakers and the hosts were wonderful (YAY SALLY and CREW!!), I absolutely loved the building. Since I took an ungodly amount of photographs, I’m going to divide them up into at least four different posts. The first being the outside of the building. Then I’ll post about the one gargoyle that’s left up on the tower (LOVE HIM!), the inside and some of the people.

For the history of the building and grounds (and if you’d like to donate to this beautiful building) please check out PRESTON CASTLE FOUNDATION

STOLEN ART ALERT – LISA KURT’S YETI PAINTING Virginia City, NV

image

From a friend who had her painting stolen up in Virginia City!!!!
LISA KURT, ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT ST. MARY’S ART CENTER.

STOLEN PAINTING ALERT- Please Share!! I’m stunned and shaken to report that I’ve had yet another painting stolen in Northern Nevada. This time one of my paintings from my picture book project show at St. Mary’s St Marys Art Center in Virginia City, NV was taken sometime this last week between 4/25/2015 -4/30/2015. I wasn’t selling these pieces because they are part of my picture book artwork that I’ve been working on to get published. This is the second theft of my work in less than 4 months in Nevada. The Cosmonaut 64 painting has yet to be returned. **Please refrain from telling me this is a compliment or that I should be flattered- this is theft of my livelihood and personal property and it is unacceptable.
Please share this widely and help me get it returned. I just want the painting back- no questions asked.
