Just a few photographs that I took while walking the trails at the McCarran Ranch of the Nature Conservancy of Nevada, Sunday, January 19th.
It was a sunny and warm (56F), a beautiful day for a hike along the river.
Wow…it’s been quite a while since I last blogged. Pop some corn, grab a beer.
Quilting & Sewing:
Since I brought my new Brother sewing machine home, I’ve putzed around with it. I’m still learning what it can and can not do, but all in all am getting the hang of it.
I’ve made up a few of these cute totes, modifying a free pattern.
Had one crafting day with friends…another one coming up. We’re gearing up for a November craft fair.
Made up another batch of mustard! Loving the smell and taste of this one! I used Stone Smoke Porter, yellow & brown mustard seed, apple cider vinegar, ground mustard, salt, pepper, allspice, nutmeg. I adapted two recipes I found (Homemade Beer and English Mustard)…it made up 10 4-oz jars. I plan on making a Cranberry Mustard too.
I was given a bag full of clipped lavender from my MIL’s garden earlier and dried it. Part of it is now in a big old canning jar of local Nevada honey with my own dried rosemary. I’ll be putting this into 4-oz canning jars in about two weeks after it’s been strained.
My sister has quite a few ghost hunting equipment and she booked the Miner’s Shack up in Gold Hill (just south of Virginia City on the Comstock). My niece, Hannah, and her friend Maddie, my sister and I all spent an afternoon in VC and the night in Gold Hill. That was fun! Definitely want to go up with them when they do the Washoe Club in VC.
I know my niece, Hannah, took a bunch of photographs, but I never see them…hint, hint…if you’re reading this, Ms. Hannah.
Carnelian Bay, Lake Tahoe:
Took a Monday off so we could spend Sunday night up at Tahoe. Spent Sunday at one of the free public beaches and Monday morning we tried kayaking (waterman’s landing). So…I’m saving my money up for a sit-in kayak now.
Truckee Trestle Tour:
We finally made it up to Truckee, CA for the Hobart Estates Trestle Tour! They’ll be having another one in October if you’re local! We toured the lumber railroads and mills.
How to have fun when your minor league team, the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks), is losing. Sorry guys for wishing one of you got beaned by the pitcher!
Just a few rambles for today. Been insanely busy at work with the new fiscal year, but still was able to take a few days off here and there.
On one of those days off I made SWEET and SAVORY RHUBARB SAUCE that I found on on Mennonite Girls Can Cook’s site. I added a few more cloves of garlic and dried peppers, and I think it could of used a bit more. I used the chicken recipe that they suggested with the recipe, and dinner was wonderful that night! I used a water bath with my batch.
I had the day after The Fourth off too…and made Beer Mustard. Overnight I soaked brown and yellow mustard seeds in Lagunitas Hop Stoopid Ale (had a bit of ale left for me!).
I probably shouldn’t have drank the rest of the ale as I could have made the mustard a bit more “runnier”…I love it though! It has a BITE to it and sorta makes your nose run. I was able to can 3 half-pints with the recipe I used, will have to find the smaller jars to give as gifts and sell at the November craft fair.
I DID IT!!!!! I paid off my sewing machine on layaway! Yesterday I brought her home with me…but all I had time to do was take her out of the box, look at all the extra feet, and wind one bobbin.
I LOVE the thread compartment…kitties can’t get to the thread now.
My first project will be the Labyrinth lap-size quilt top that I’ll make in class this coming Monday. I even have all my fabric cut out for class.
Have a great weekend everyone!
FOR TODAY … 1 July 2013
Outside My Window… Blue sky with smoke haze, no clouds looking north, east and west. Going to be a blistering hot day today, probably will break ANOTHER high record. Little sparrows and finches on the bird feeder.
I am thinking… I really wonder what’s wrong with parents these days…why aren’t they instilling morals into those little brats of theirs? On a walk last night we caught five kids (ranging in age from 9-13) throwing good size rocks at a Red Tail Hawks nest that had two fledglings in it. I almost picked up a rock and flung it at them. But we gave them a good chewing out saying they are federally protected birds. The three younger ones cried, but the older ones kept looking up like they wanted to keep throwing. We stuck around until they left. I called Nevada Dept. of Wildlife to see if they made welfare checks. I was worried the older one came back to do some damage.
I am thankful for… for the a/c here at work. Supposed to be 106 today…another record high (like the last 3-4 days in a row).
From the kitchen… I’m thinking of making a pizza, if my herbs don’t wilt from the sun/heat.
I am wearing… Capris, olive green shirt, and sandals.
I am creating… right now I’m pulling out blue and green batiks from my stash. I signed up to take a quilting class as an early birthday present to myself.
I am going… to heat up my lunch soon…leftover Mediterranean turkey burgers.
I am reading… Nothing at the moment, book-wise.
I am hoping… The hawk fledglings are ok. Hate for them to be pushed out of the nest into the waiting hands of thug kids.
I am hearing… The a/c running!
Around the house… Cleaned…the house is cleaned.
One of my favorite things… pretty fabrics…and having some money to buy said pretty fabrics.
A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week… Dial in the batik fabrics to 7 for the quilt. Pay off the rest of my sewing machine (only $138 left to pay!). Figure where to go on the 4th.
Here is a few pictures thought I’d share with you…
FOR TODAY … 12 June 2013
Outside My Window… Blue sky, no clouds (yet) with a breeze picking up speed.
I am thinking… How long it will take me to snap with my neighbor’s loud, annoying alarm clock going off at 3 am, with her letting it go off and on until she drags her lazy ass out of bed at 4? I’m awake at the first two rings…is she taking drugs at night to sleep?! WAKE UP! It really takes an hour to get up out of bed?! Holy Cow!
I am thankful for… the downpour we got a few days ago, luckily my area didn’t flood and my veggies on the deck are growing like crazy.
From the kitchen… last night I made Turmeric Chicken with Sumac & Lime , if you make it, cut down the salt to 1 tsp or less! Tonight will be just a pasta with whatever veggies I have on hand.
I am wearing… Capris, margarita lime green shirt, and sandals.
I am creating… Two baby quilts (getting ready for our November craft fair). I pulled out a stack of 3.5″ 1930′s charms I cut out last year and made HST out of them. Added a bunch of different HST quilt patterns to my quilt board on Pinterest, not exactly sure which two I’ll use yet.
I am going… to either Office Depot or Staples to buy a memory card for my camera…have reward money to both of them.
I am reading… Just finished a time travel series of books and I pulled up one called Angel’s Ink The Asylum Tales (I download LOTS of free ebooks on FB Nook Book Free Fridays).
I am hoping… we can stay in the mid-80′s for at least the rest of June, that 100 degree stretch was unbearable.
I am hearing… Phones ringing in other offices and me typing.
Around the house… Laundry…bedding needs to be washed.
One of my favorite things… Being lazy, in the water, at Pyramid Lake, with a margarita and inner tube.
A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week… Press open HST so I can start sewing them together.
Here is a picture thought I’d share with you… last night’s sunset.
Today was free fishing day here in Nevada…but we also were up for breaking another high heat record and figured the fish would tell us “screw you…it’s too hot to take your bait” so we went to Cabela’s just west of town. They were having a family outdoor day with fly fishing, shooting, and bow instruction; birds of prey; and snakes.
Just want to show you some of the beautiful girls we met today ~ They were going to have a flying demonstration, but it was too windy and WAY TOO HOT for them. These girls are employed as “pest control”!
My garden space this year has diminished quite drastically…I have to utilize my balcony. Luckily it’s positioned for optimum sunshine!
I decided to limit myself to herbs, tomatoes, leafy greens, and probably a chile pepper of some sort. We have pretty good farmers markets around the Reno/Sparks area so I’ll supplement my kitchen herbs with the local farmer’s goodies.
I got these nifty containers, from Lowes, that sit on top of the balcony rails…the rest of the containers are made up of old flower pots I’ve found and some of my enameled cooking pots.
So far I have planted chives, sweet basil, Greek oregano, Italian flat-leafed parsley (hate the curly stuff), lemon thyme, rosemary, orange mint, two different lavenders, summer savory, cilantro, red Russian Kale, German chamomile, and arugula.
Still need dill, either a jalapeño, serrano or New Mexican green chile, I’m thinking two heirloom tomatoes, garlic…and some radish seeds.
