FOR TODAY … 17 November 2008

Outside My Window… Sunny, high whispy clouds ~ going to be in the upper 60’s again.

I am thinking… What a shmuck…I forgot my camera sitting in the sunroom this morning. I can’t get to all those great pictures I took on my walk yesterday! Grrr. Hmmmm….do I really want to go to the local “Dog Pound” tonight? I wonder if any other Buffalo Bills fans will descend on the Great Basin Brewery and brave the Browns fans home territory for tonight’s Monday Night Football. 🙂

I am thankful for… My family; being able to go to Monterey; my church.

From the kitchen… I made up a bunch of beef pasties…two will be dinner tonight with a salad.

Took a package of cubed beef (for stew/chili ~ about 2-3 cups…you can use deli roast beef) browned it in Mrs. Dash seasonings, drained and put it in a bowl with the following: 1 large potato, cubed; package of organic frozen veggies (I picked out the one with corn, peas, beans, carrots); 1 cup shredded extra sharp cheddar and 1 cup Pepper Jack cheese. Mix it all up.

I took two boxes of pie crusts (you can make them by scratch)…rolled out each crust, cut in half and then rolled width-wise to make them a little wider. Scoop out 1 to 1-3/4 cups of beef mixture onto one end and then fold over the other side and crimp edges together.

If you’re not going to make them that day…wrap in plastic wrap, place in freezer ziplock baggie and freeze. Otherwise ~ place on a baking sheet and bake at 375F for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

I am wearing… blue jeans, tennies and a tan 3/4 sleeve t-shirt.

I am creating… soy candles.

I am going… to google the Christmas list of the two kids I took off of the angel tree at church.

I am reading… Still not reading anything at night…just the newspaper when I get home from work.

I am hoping… that a job is out there for my husband, he’s officially out of work today.

I am hearing… Just me typing…and NPR news on the computer.

Around the house… my husband will be washing the dishes (no dish washer machine in our house…just two hands!) and vacuuming the throw rugs.

One of my favorite things… taking pictures on a beautiful autumn day, by yourself…it’s that part where a heavy breathing runner scares the bejesus out of me that is not part of that favorite thing. LOL!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… figuring out what grocery store has a ham on sale for work’s Thanksgiving Potluck…need to pick up some items to make stuffing/dressing too.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…a French Beaded Mistletoe Kissing Ball I made last year with 11/0 Czech seed beads.

Cast Iron Reflector Swinging Arm Wall Bracket for Kerosene Oil Lamp

Over the weekend my mom gave me Great Grandma Chambers’ cast iron wall bracket and kerosene lamp. I remember it on the wall in our house in Southern California when I was a kid…it was in the Chambers’ homestead in Lynch, Nebraska long before that. I didn’t take a picture of the lamp itself, but it’s clear glass with the original brass hardware. Now I have to figure out where in my house to hang this lovely…I’m thinking in the kitchen or front sunroom.

I found the site Antique Lamp Supply and figured out what that hole on the top part of the arm (see second picture, above) was for ~ to hold a Mercury Reflector. And…except for the bowl part, my arm is just like their #73801. My mom said she doesn’t remember ever seeing a reflector attached to this lamp, so if it had one it was before 1940’s. I would need to buy the mercury reflector & attachment, and reflector nut if I want it to be in original condition.

YEAH! I get to go to Monterey for Thanksgiving!

Well…I swung the trip to Monterey this Thanksgiving. Between my mom, MIL, and I…we have enough money to go.

So this will be me again…hee!

Found a motel in Seaside for $39/night, not too far from the hotel we stayed at in July. Two free tickets to the aquarium. Money from mom for dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Money for gas and dinner from my MIL. Happy Dancing!

For Today ~ 12 November 2008 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

Yes…I know it’s not Monday, but it’s MY Monday (had a four-day weekend).

FOR TODAY … 12 November 2008

Outside My Window… Partly cloudy day. The sun is peeking out between them, low on the southeastern horizon. Not quite so chilly this morning, only had condensation on the windows, not frost.

I am thinking… I worked my arse off on my two days off! What’s up with that?! No naps even! I made 230 lip balms on Monday…and over 120 1-oz solid lotions on Tuesday. Now I have to make labels for them…and labels for the 5 batches of soap I made at the end of July, they’re nice and hard now…ready to be sold here at work.

I am thankful for… Once again, my family.

From the kitchen… Chicken is defrosting with a Chipotle marinade. Will get the BBQ ready when I get home from work. I made up Pesole last night…just leftover chicken broth that I had in the freezer, cut up a pork roast that my MIL sent me home with on Sunday night, added a bag of roasted green chiles (I froze a lot of them) that came from the garden and a can of hominy. Grilled some tortillas to go along with it. Yummie. Have some for lunch today.

I am wearing… blue jeans, tennies and a black mock turtleneck.

I am creating… just finished making lip balms and solid lotions, will get back into my quilting soon.

I am going… go balance the checkbook after I post this.

I am reading… I have four books next to my bed and I’m not reading any of them. I’m too tired when I crawl into bed.

I am hoping… that a job is out there for my husband, this is his last week at the temp job.

I am hearing… me typing. It’s quiet.

Around the house… it’s clean. Clean, Clean, Clean. Well…as clean as I get it, which probably isn’t as clean as other people’s clean. 🙂

One of my favorite things… used to be helping my dad hang Christmas lights the day after Thanksgiving. I still do that, but on my own now.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… probably quilting and labeling lip balms, lotions, and soap.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…melting shea butter, olive oil, and waxes 1/3 cup at a time ~

The Little Things That Make Me Happy ~ November

Sorta been down in the dumps this week…lots of things coming at me from all angles, just want to go home and hunker down.

Between husband’s lack of a job, bills to pay, the woe-is-me dramatics goings-on in one of my groups that I’m a leader of (and don’t want to be anymore), lack of sunshine for long period of time, trying to see if we could foot a very small weekend trip to Monterey (have two tickets to the aquarium but not sure we can afford to spend the night), blah, blah, blah…

So once again, I need an attitude adjustment…Things that make me happy ~

A while back I bought a bunch of wool and bamboo yarn then sent it to my friend Sharon to make socks in her own time…I washed them all last night and put them on the bedroom’s steam radiator heater. I think of her everytime I have nice warm tootsies! 🙂 She’s an awesome lady!

Old quilt blocks that need me! My mom still gets together with the Washoe Valley Ladies (homemaker’s group of some sort! LOL!…I think all they did was get together once a month to eat, drink, talk about the kids, husbands, and drink some more ~ Hee!) and one of them dropped off bags and bags and bags of fabric. These 20 Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks, with extra 1930’s & 1940’s fabrics, was part of that. I’m going to continue with the hand-piecing of them.

Meadowlarks…I love Meadowlarks, especially in Wyoming.

Family…my niece and nephew with their wee cousin.

A sampler of Sierra Nevada Ales ~ yum. That Chico IPA was delish! 😀

Rays at Monterey…and I want to pet them again, very calming and makes me smile.

Tuesday’s Ramblings ~ 04 November 2008

The Reno Mineral and Gem Society had a craft fair at one of the local malls…while looking around on Sunday we ran into my husband’s aunt and uncle (he’s a geologist). Tom showed me some of his collections that were on sale. He let me have two pieces of fluorite on dolomite, from a mine in Tennessee, for $7.50. One is mine (the large fluorite crystal) and the other will be a Christmas gift for my niece. I also picked up a couple of petrified twigs for .50 cents.

It snowed up in the Sierra last night! Rained like the dickens down here in the valley…frozen rain on the car this morning. Grrr. I hate scraping the windows.

Some leaves that were in front of the back entry way to my work building.

Was playing with the camera settings on Halloween ~
