How Does Your Garden Grow….Sparks, Nevada…early May 2009

How is everyone’s garden out there in northern Nevada?

I’m getting a slower start than I did last year. But I figured I’d wait to finish planting until May 16th, when I get my heirloom tomatoes and whatnot from the UNCE Master Gardener Plant Sale.

Here’s what is poking their heads up so far ~

Garlic and Red & Yellow Onions

Two of the three Horseradish plants are up and about too! I’ll get pictures this weekend. The carrots just woke up.

My blueberry plants are blooming ~

And here are some pictures of the front yard….looking much better now that we yanked those stupid Junipers out! See all those rocks below? Those are what we pull out of the ground when digging. Lots and lots of river cobbles.

Say, how do you find out when that Master Gardner sale is? Every year I run a 50:50 chance of forgetting to check the papers in time, and they never seem to post anything until a week or so prior. In fact, your blog was the first thing to come up on my Googler just now (based on last May’s post). Living in Truckee, it’s pretty easy to forget all about it. They don’t seem to have any mailing list or anything, at least so far as I can tell. Any tips? Thanks!

      • I just know that they hold it every May around Mother’s Day. They (UNCE) have a calendar that you can check…

I see you have a UNR addie…are you a student or work on campus? I work at UNR.

How wonderfuly lush! I’m getting a slow start this year. Still working on expanding the garden. I don’t think I’ve ever seen blueberry blossoms before. They’re lovely:)

Is that the quilt you and your mom are making?

  4. Donna, if you’re taking about the top picture, yes…that is one of the blocks of the crazy quilt.
