Sullivans Quilt Basting Spray

Ok…I’ve never spray basted my quilts before. Pinned the crap out of them is what I did! 🙂 But I’ve had 3 friends tell me they’d rather use spray basting. So I stopped off at Windy Moon Quilts, my local quilt shop, and found Sullivan’s Quilt Basting Spray. While holding it in my hand, Sue came up and I asked her if she’s ever used this. “It’s the only stuff I use! We don’t even allow pins in our classes!” Ok then! I’ll try it.

Not hard at all…just read the directions and followed them. Only I taped down the backing to the table, laid down the batting, put the top on and then pulled back the top and sprayed 12″ at a time. Waited 3-4 minutes, then smoothed the top from the center out. Kept doing that until the whole top was tacked on. Then flipped the whole thing over and sprayed the backing on the same way.

I have King Tut’s 40/3 machine quilting thread ready in the Singer 301…it’s all set up for Free Motion Quilting.

IT’S FRIDAY! ~ 28 January 2011

OMGosh…It’s been a really bad month here at work, super busy, neverending, lots of WTF?!, lots of needy people. 🙂 Good thing there is Sierra Nevada IPA at home in the frig. Actually…after hearing what April & Chris are having for dinner tonight, a margarita sorta sounds really good at the moment….hmmmmmm.

For Today ~ 24 January 2011 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 24 January 2011.

Outside My Window… Sunshine, blue sky with a few clouds. A guy picking up trash and another picking up cans. Traffic on McCarran.

I am thinking… Where the heck did January go to? Man it’s been a fast month.

I am thankful for… our freaky warm weather we’ve been having! Mid-High 50F all week long!

From the kitchen… Leftover enchiladas I made with carnitas, onion, cheese a green chile (in each one!)…verde sauce.

I am wearing… Jeans, tennies, long-sleeved grey blouse, hair down.

I am creating… Still working on that pinwheel quilt! The top is all sewn together sans the borders. I also cut out the ‘orange quilt’…it’s already to be put together.

I am going… I’m not sure where I’m going. Home? Lunch? Over to the lab? Bug someone? Your guess is as good as mine!

I am reading… quilting and fabric magazines.

I am hoping… that the State of the State tonight isn’t going to give me migraine!

I am hearing… a coworker.

Around the house… Clean! Every Sunday I get a burr under my saddle blanket and get cleaning! 🙂

One of my favorite things… A window with sun pouring through…me fighting the cats for position in said sun pouring through the window.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… quilt.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

I have always loved Cabbage Quilts blog header. So I took a picture of the pinwheels last night…and this morning I used PhotoScape’s Water Color Pencil filter.

Pinwheel Quilt Progress…more Orange Fabric

Just an update on the Connecting Threads Pinwheel quilt that my friend, April and I are making in a ‘quilt-along’.

I have column one sewn to two and column three sewn to four…tonight I’ll sew those together and work my way to the right. 🙂

I think I am finished with collecting orange fabric for THIS QUILT , from Cluck.Cluck.Sew.~ but one never knows for sure. These are the last ones I collected:

For Today ~ 18 January 2011 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 18 January 2011~

Outside My Window… people driving to work, high clouds, geese flying by…gonna be another BEAUTIFUL SPRING DAY in January!

I am thinking… I’m not! Rut-roh.

I am thankful for… Mom Nature’s 3 days of Spring…probably gearing us up for an upcoming blizzard, but I’ll take it! 🙂

From the kitchen… I just made broiled chicken breasts with white rice and steamed broccoli last night…not sure about tonight.

I am wearing… Jeans, tennies, blue TSHIRT, hair in ponytail.

I am creating… a pinwheel quilt. Lots and lots of bloody pinwheels…WHAAHAHAHAHA! Still feel that way about those pinwheels, but I finished them. Here’s what it looks like up on the design wall. Still have to figure out the borders.

Pinwheel Layout

I am going… have to call Progressive, we took that piece of shit Ford Thunderbird to Pick-n-Pull on Sunday (I’m sure it was a very good car in 1984)…now we have to invest that money into the Chevy pickup so it will go another year or so. Hopefully then we can look at something newer.

I am reading… quilting and fabric magazines.

I am hoping… that the Governor really doesn’t make us take a 5% pay cut…it took me a long time to get to where I’m at now. I don’t mind the 4.6% Furloughs that we’ve been taking for the last year….on top of no COLA (last 3 years), no merit (last 2.5 years), no steps (last 2.5 years), doing the work of two people (last 2 years), higher insurance, less benefits…just leave my salary where it’s at.

I am hearing… cars and birds.

Around the house… House still pretty clean…still amazed at that new vacuum cleaner. Is my house really that dirty? Or is it two cats and me?

One of my favorite things… Odwalla Superfood Juice! Sometimes I add a bit of protein powder to it. Yummy and good for you!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… piece my quilt top, watch a few movies, take some long walks.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

Washoe Valley ~ Slide Mountain…taken on last Saturday’s hike up Deadman’s Creek trail. Washoe Lake was partially frozen…as was parts of the trail.

Charm Bracelets

Over Christmas break my niece and I hit a few spots where I gave her some money to buy something for herself (Nevada Museum of Art and Reno Bead Shop)…she picked out a few charms and asked me to make her a charm bracelet.

Yesterday was a furlough day, so I figured I’d make her bracelet…sorry about the qualtity of the pictures, it was early morning and I didn’t quite have the right lighting.

She picked out a Yin Yang, Frog, Sun, Dragon, Football Helmet (Minnesota Vikings), Plane (trip to New Orleans), Peace Sign (because she’s that kind of girl! 🙂 ), Butterfly, and Dog. I found a dog that looked more like her Kona, an H (for Hannah), a Seahorse, a different Peace Sign (not so large and with a green crystal in it), and a fleur-de-lis (for her upcoming trip to New Orleans!). I chose a silver toggle with greenish moonstone crystals around it. I left some room for any new charms that she finds in New Orleans.

Then I pulled out my charm bracelet that I had when I was a kid! Not a lot on there, I think it was started at an earlier age than Hannahs. I have the following silver and ivory charms on mine: San Francisco Cable Car, an Ivory fish from Alaska, (missing is a movie camera from Universal Studios), a Japanese character from SF Japanese Tea Garden, Disneyland Castle, an Alaskan Cache, Mt. Rushmore, McKinley Park, Crazy Horse, Pack Burro from Calico Ghost Town.

I may have to make myself a new bracelet and start adding more charms!

Elgin Open-Faced Pocket Watch used on SPRR

My Father-in-Law died at the beginning of this year, he was a retired Engineer with the Southern Pacific Railroad (44 years). Earlier this week my husband’s mom asked him over to go over two pocket watches that his dad used on the railroad. He is hoping one day to get his Great-Grandfather’s pocket watch, but she’s not ready to part with that yet which is wholly understandable!

This is the one he picked out ~ while I’m not sure it can be considered a true railroad pocket watch, as it does not quite meet the requirements below…my FIL did use it on the railroad. 🙂 Well worn watch!

The General Railroad Timepiece Standards were adopted by most railroads in 1893. They had to meet the following standards:

A railroad watch had to be open faced, size 16 or 18, have a minimum of 17 jewels, adjusted to at least five positions, keep time accurately to within 30 seconds a week, adjusted to temps of 34 to 100 degrees F. have a double roller, steel escape wheel, lever set, regulator, winding stem at 12 o’clock, and have bold black arabic numerals on a white dial, with black hands.

It’s an Open-faced Elgin ~

Serial number: 21500078
Year 1918
Grade 317
Class 106
Size 18
15 Jewels

The case is Fahys Montauk Guaranteed 20 Years. From research online I found that “The Fahys Montauk case is a gold-filled case, 15-year if made up to March 1898, 20-year if made thereafter.”
