Monday Rambles ~ 8 October 2012

Big sigh of relief…Autumn weather is finally making an appearance here in Reno. I’m glad the summer heat is waning.

I even greeted the cooler weather with making a pan of lasagna yesterday! I’ve been wanting to try a sauce recipe that I saw on Jennifer’s blog THE MUDDY KITCHEN…Make Sauce like a Sicilian. Holy Moly…was that a simple yet tasty sauce! I followed the directions to the t…except I added pine nuts to the garlic and olive oil stage.

Sicilian Sauce

I had enough for two pans of lasagna (froze one for another dinner)…that yummy sauce with Italian turkey sausage, mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, crookneck squash, fresh spinach, fresh mozzarella, ricotta, and shaved parmesan.

A while ago I bought a book off of Amazon ~ Making Wire & Bead Jewelry: Artful Wirework Techniques by Janice Berkebile and Tracy Stanley. All I can say is WOW! I’ve never seen a how-to book with so many awesome photographs to help you along.

I tried a pair of copper paddle drop earrings for my first project.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I made ear wires in sterling silver, like the copper ones, for April’s earrings…they are off in the mail to her.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Friday was the return trip of Union Pacific’s steam engine #844…she’s on her way back to Cheyenne for maintenance before heading to Texas to show off.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday we drove down to Carson City and visited the Greenhouse Project at Carson City High School. What a cool place! And great project! We toured the greenhouse, raised beds and a hoop house that a student was working on for his senior project. We watched as the manager showed how to propagate herbs from cuttings…took some oregano and sage home with us.
~~~~~~~~~~~

We found an great bamboo chair (rocks and swivels) for our balcony at the SPCA thrift store in town for $15…on the lookout for another one.

For Today ~ 1 October 2012 ~ A Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 01 October 2012!!!! It’s OCTOBER! YAY!

Outside My Window… Sun. Going to be another HOT day. SOB! It’s supposed to be in the 70’s NOT THE 90’s! Ok…enough of the rant. Tree’s are changing colors as are the fire bushes. There’s a few wee sunflowers that the birds planted.

I am thinking… Thoughts are scattered today…me thinks the full moon had people weirded out where I live…they kept me up both Saturday and Sunday nights. Headache didn’t help either.

I am thankful for… For allergy meds, since the rabbit brush is blooming for what seems like the 50th time this year.

From the kitchen… Maybe pizza, maybe grilled ham and cheese…not really sure.

I am wearing… Tan cropped pants and a olive green shirt, tennis shoes and my hair down.

I am creating… I took a break from leather/bead wrap bracelets to make my friend, April, her earrings. Sterling silver hammered wire with pearls, silver and purple beads. I don’t like the french wires I put on them so will go look for posts or make them myself.

I am going… try to find out if and when the UP #844 will be coming back east so I can get pictures of her in the canyon west of Reno.

I am reading… Still not finished with The Hobbit. Been flipping through a few different magazines too.

I am hoping… That once this weekend rolls around with the cooler weather that it will STAY.

I am hearing… Cars on McCarran and Enterprise, people walking in the hallway, me typing.

Around the house… is clean! I did a lot of housework yesterday.

One of my favorite things… Pumpkins. Football. Baseball’s scramble to get into the playoffs. My Giants have no worries…so GO Oakland and Detroit!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… Look for something to wrap my soaps up in…I may just use parchment paper and string.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

For Today ~ 20 August 2012 ~ A Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 20 August 2012.

Outside My Window…

Reno, Nevada sunrise ~ 20 August 2012

I am thinking… It sure would be nice if autumn would come sooner than later. I’m really tired of the heat and wildfire smoke here in town.

The red maple out front is starting to turn colors.

I am thankful for… Friends. Love them to pieces.

From the kitchen… Pork chops and rice for dinner tonight. One of my favorite dishes that my Great Aunt Hazel would fix my sister and I when we visited.

I am wearing… cropped olive green/tan pants, olive green shirt, and sketchers sandals.

I am creating… I’m multi-tasking at the moment. Just finished another wire-wrapped pendant yesterday. Am still hand-piecing a Farmer’s Wife quilt block.

Wire-wrapped piece of petrified wood.

First pendant…with the copper “antiqued”

I am going… have to start looking for craft fairs coming up! Ruth, Reva and I have been making stuff all year long. I found one in Portola, this October, for $25/table. Need to find some in town.

I am reading… Finished all three stories in Mary Downing Hahn’s Haunting Tales, will have to just close my eyes and pick another book on my nook.

I am hoping… That I my copper wire wrapping becomes better as I really would like to use the silver wire! LOL!

I am hearing… a small plane overhead; traffic on McCarran; me.

Around the house… Laundry.

One of my favorite things… creating with my hands.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… Try out a few new dinner recipes; buy a good pair of flat-nosed pliers for jewelry making; finish up a few leather wrapped bracelets.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you… (LOL! I’ve been sharing pics like crazy up above, but will find another)

Spent wildflowers outside of Portola, CA.

Show and Tell ~ My First Wire Wrapped Class

Ok…after seeing the pictures up-close, I see some adjustments needed and a few mistakes I made…but all in all, I like it. 🙂

Classes at Mill Street Beads & Rocks, here in Reno, are only $25 AND all the tools and supplies are included. Unfortunetly, they are retiring and closing up shop soon. Anyhoo…there were four stone beads to choose from, I picked a pretty olive green one since we were using copper wire.

Fun! Fun! Fun! I bought a few packets of copper square and half-round 21 gauge to play with it some more.

I’ll be using some liver of sulphur on this pendant to antique the copper…it’s way too bright for me. 🙂

I need to scoochie the wraps closer together and get rid of the black mark.

The front.

The back of the piece.

Here is a piece of petrified wood I’m going to try next! I just don’t know which side to make the front. What do you think? I bought this for $3 up in Chilcoot, CA on our way to Portola after class…it was Train Days (will post pics on Monday).

Which side should be the front?!

Finished Nevada Quilt and Leather Bead Wrap Bracelets

Well…I finally finished the quilt I designed for someone my sister knows. I’m pleased at how it turned out, even if it was a bugger to put together. 🙂

~~~~~~~~~~
Am taking a break from quilting now…dug out my leather cords, beads, buttons, thread and needles!
And making a bunch of these:
Charm Bracelets
Over Christmas break my niece and I hit a few spots where I gave her some money to buy something for herself (Nevada Museum of Art and Reno Bead Shop)…she picked out a few charms and asked me to make her a charm bracelet.
Yesterday was a furlough day, so I figured I’d make her bracelet…sorry about the qualtity of the pictures, it was early morning and I didn’t quite have the right lighting.
She picked out a Yin Yang, Frog, Sun, Dragon, Football Helmet (Minnesota Vikings), Plane (trip to New Orleans), Peace Sign (because she’s that kind of girl! 🙂 ), Butterfly, and Dog. I found a dog that looked more like her Kona, an H (for Hannah), a Seahorse, a different Peace Sign (not so large and with a green crystal in it), and a fleur-de-lis (for her upcoming trip to New Orleans!). I chose a silver toggle with greenish moonstone crystals around it. I left some room for any new charms that she finds in New Orleans.
Then I pulled out my charm bracelet that I had when I was a kid! Not a lot on there, I think it was started at an earlier age than Hannahs. I have the following silver and ivory charms on mine: San Francisco Cable Car, an Ivory fish from Alaska, (missing is a movie camera from Universal Studios), a Japanese character from SF Japanese Tea Garden, Disneyland Castle, an Alaskan Cache, Mt. Rushmore, McKinley Park, Crazy Horse, Pack Burro from Calico Ghost Town.
I may have to make myself a new bracelet and start adding more charms!
