What’s Your Favorite Handmade Soap Scent?

A couple of friends and I are busy making up things for an undetermined craft fair (later in the year)…I’m quilting, sewing, printing photographs, and will be making cold-process soap.

Put an order into Brambleberry and received my oils, butters, and lye (figured I can buy olive and sunflower oil here in town).

What’s your favorite smellies for soap?

HINT HINT…I like to make Oatmeal Milk & Honey, Peppermint, and Lavender. But was wondering what other people liked.

Soapmaking on a state Furlough Day

How I spent my furlough day…hopefully making up some of the money that the State of Nevada taketh away.

Started off Sunday afternoon measuring out oils and butters into four separate baggies…that way I just needed to add the olive oil or safflower oil when needed.

After the SF Giants game I decided to go ahead and make up one batch…Oatmeal, Milk & Honey with Colloidal Oatmeal. UGH! Remind me to run my recipe through Lye Calculator before charging in…I was short 20 grams of lye in my water mixture. Took me ONE FLIPPING HOUR to bring to trace! My arm fell off.

While out this morning, my husband found out that I had the day off and asked for me to go to a thrift store to see if a jacket was still there, I found a hand mixer at the same thrift store! YEAH!

Got back and made up three more batches…WITH ONLY 20 MINUTES to bring to trace! Can I get an AMEN!?!

Lavender ~ not out of the mold yet.

Mayan Gold with rhassoul clay…this is a guy’s soap…that the ladies will love, Love. LOVE! 🙂 I’d have a picture, but it turned out blurry and I didn’t want to go down to the basement to take another.

Black Raspberry with pacific sea salt and ultra marine.

Just to let you know…an Amazon box makes a great soap slab mold! 🙂

Still want to make one more batch…more for myself than anything. I love essential fir with some autumn woods and some green French clay
& sea salt thrown in.

I’ll pretend my salt and fir smell came from here…The Presidio! 🙂

For Today ~ 19 September 2010 ~ A Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 19 September 2010

Outside My Window…It’s 10:00 pm at night…dark. I see my neighbor’s kitchen light on.

I am thinking… IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME that the team backed Barry Zito up with some runs! Goodness sakes! The poor guy hasn’t won a game since mid-July! Awesome game! ~~~~ The batch of Oatmeal Milk & Honey cold processed soap sure took a long time to trace! Holy Smokes…almost an hour! And I still didn’t get a 100% trace before my arm gave out. Cross your fingers! ~~~~ I can’t believe that my Bills LOST AGAIN! ACK! Sorta funny…my baseball team is the San Francisco Giants…my football team is the Buffalo Bills…and my hockey team is the Detroit Red Wings. ~~~~ Don’t ask…it beats me!

I am thankful for… that I have a day off on Monday…even if it’s a Furlough day and I won’t get paid for it.

From the kitchen… Pizza….and soap. 🙂 One batch of soap down…three more to go.

I am wearing… Shorts, my painting/soap making t-shirt that should probably be thrown away, barefoot, hair up and it’s a right frightful mess! Am trying to grow my bangs out and they’re at the shaggy dog stage.

I am creating… Soap. Oatmeal Milk and Honey is finished. I have Lavender, Autumn Fir, and something called Mayan Gold…all I can say is it would make a man yummy smelling.

I am going… check my soap calculations one more time to see if I need to increase the lye/water ratio in my recipe. I really don’t want to have to stir for an hour again.

I am reading… Stephen King’s The Colorado Kid…only a couple more pages to go. Am not really sure why they say Haven is based off of the book, so far I can only guess it’s the two old newspaper dudes that the book and tv show has in common.

I am hoping… that the Giants have a safe flight to Chicago and have a great series on the road. That my order from Brambleberry comes in soon so I can make soap with my niece. I decided to get a melt and pour soap for her first time…10 years old is just too young to help me make soap with lye.

I am hearing… the college girls move out in the front part of the duplex that I live in. Can I get an AMEN!?! Banging, slamming, yelling, squealing…hmmmmm…hopefully those are moving sounds I’m hearing. Sheesh…I’m starting to think that they’re thrashing the place!

Around the house… clean sheets on the bed, laundry done, floors vacuumed. TV on with Masterpiece Mystery…Inspector Lewis, Series III.

One of my favorite things… Still the ocean….will always be the ocean. Anyone know of any job openings in San Francisco?

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… Monday is a busy day of soap making…need to use my 50% off Michaels coupons, great for a quick pickup of soy wax.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

Oh Say Can You See...

Take Me Out To The Ball Game

The Simple Woman is the original home of The Simple Woman's Daybook.

Soon it will be soap making time!

My order from Bramble Berry came yesterday…very soon I’ll be making soap!

Palm Oil, Coconut Oil, Mango Butter, Shea Butter, and deodorized Cocoa Butter (already had the lye). Just need to go to the store and pick up some Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil and a jug of distilled water.

I have my two favorite recipes from The Soapmaker’s Companion book…which I’ve modified to my liking.

Very soon…all of that will look like this:

Peppermint Tea Tree

Thursdays Rambles ~ 09 September 2010

First off…got out of the car at work this morning and looked up to the mountains.

Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain had a dusting of snow last night! 🙂

I went to bed last night (after a heart-wrenching lost for Zito…he really did pitch a good game last night!) feeling like it was closer to Halloween than it is. It was cold and breezy…loved it!

FOOTBALL starts tonight! Vikings and Saints! And…ah…GOOD LUCK to my BILLS this year!

In the midst of September baseball…Giants have been chasing San Diego and the Phillies (now it’s the Braves, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!). Hopefully we can knock the Padres out of first and then not worry about chasing the Braves/Phillies anymore.

Just put in an order for cocoa butter, mango butter, shea butter, palm oil, and coconut oil! I’ve had many requests for my handmade soap…people must be gearing up for Christmas!

I have lots of earrings I made too…should anyone need to buy some small Christmas gifts! Hint Hint Hint.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had to order Stephen King’s The Colorado Kid from Amazon. Sundance Books, here in Reno, tried to order it for me, but said it’s out of print and can’t get it for me. 😦 Haven, one of my favorite tv shows on SyFy, is loosely based on it. I want to know how it’s tied into the book…should be here by tomorrow.
Working on a Crafters Challenge…colors this time around are olive green, rust, brown and one of color I can pick myself. I’m doing a quilt again…I have the top finished. Using flannel material that I had in my stash.
Are We There YET?!
I’m soooo looking forward to Autumn.
It’s too bloody hot here in Northern Nevada…and it was so hard not to hug the tv last night while watching Thursday Night Football to try to feel the rain that was coming down in Philly. It’s not fair.
We’ve been in the Low 100F and High 90sF the past week…supposed to have a cool down on Tuesday to 90F!!! WooHoo!
Ok…done whining about the weather for the day.
Update pics on the backyard garden ~ I’ll be picking the last of the beans this weekend, me thinks. And at least 1/2 of the carrots. Will blanch and freeze ’em.
I’ve been trying really hard not to pick anymore peppers until they’ve changed colors. Those long skinny ones, that I had no clue as to what they were (I figured they were Serranos on steroids), are Cayennes! Ohhhh…that’s why they are so scrumptious in my Pico de Gallo! Definitely will plant those again next year.
Cayenne Peppers! SOOOO Yummmie!
Sweet Italian Peppers
Very cool looking Miniature Caribbean Habenaro Reds ~ bet they aren’t too cool to bite into though. 🙂
I’ve been picking cucumbers like crazy lately.
Corn is all off the stocks, except for one stock of corn that grew somewhere else in the yard…probably thanks to a bird pooping. It has about 4 ears that are almost ready to pick. The rest of the stocks I’ll be leaving in the ground until it’s time to decorate for fall. I love tying a bunch of them up to the cedar trees out front.
Have to figure out what to do with all my green onions ~ will be bringing some into work as there is interest in them from a few people.
Squash gone wild!
The moon last night ~ guess I should have gotten the tripod out, but I was lazy.
Soap I made, and named it after the moon ~ Sea of Tranquility ~ it is scented by essential oils of Bergamot, Clary Sage, Rosemary and a little bit of Peppermint. Very relaxing smell. But I must say it drives me absolutely bonkers, as it is curing under the Spiced Chocolate Caffee soap on top of the frig…and every time I walk by I get a whif of Chocolate Mint. ACK!
This is Mad Max ~ he was a little hot…wasn’t happy about getting his picture taken…Grumpy Ole Man.
Was craving popped corn last night…and not the microwave crap…the real thing. Got everything out to make it and then came to the realization of what a HORRIBLE MISTAKE I made in choosing my stove! I bought the ceramic stove top oven! You can’t make popped corn on that type of surface! So out came my hot plate that I melt soy wax on…Thank Goodness I had that!
Playing with the camera modes last night…the lighting was too low for the first picture, but I like it anyhoo.
And last, but definitely not least in my book ~ one of my lovelies ~ My Precious!
Ok…one more bitch session about the junipers! We are down to TWO juniper stumps that we are having a Dickens of a Time getting out. Big sigh. Why are they allowed to plant those bloody things?! They should be outlawed! I’m ready to pour gas on them and flick a match in their direction…invite the neighborhood over for a weenie roast.
LOL! Ya see that orange cone next to the BENT sign post? That was our neighbor across the street backing his boat out…he did the same thing to the other post on his side of the street. Looks like he hasn’t been doing that well driving lately, as the front end of his truck is smooshed somewhat!
Tuesday’s Ramblings ~ Garden Veggies, Soap, Candles, Boys & Critters, Sunflowers & Pumpkins
I know…long title.
Garden Veggies ~
I don’t have a lot of corn to freeze, mainly because we’ve been eating it! 🙂 But I wanted to freeze some of it for a later date ~ either to put in stews, salsas, or just to eat as a veggie with our meal. So far I’ve only blanched 7 ears and then cut the kernels off of the cob ~ which yielded four bags. I have more corn on the stocks, but I’ll let them go a little longer. After I took the picture below I nibbled on the cobs to clean them off…oh my ~ very sweet corn!
Over the weekend I had pulled about a 1/4 of my carrot crop and chopped them in large chucks, blanched and froze.
Cold Processed Soap ~
I cut the Fall Apple Crisp, Sierra Nevada Forest, and Oatmeal Milk & Honey (with a tad of Arabian Spice) cold processed soaps…they are up in the window nooks for at least 4 weeks of curing.
Apple Crisp
Sierra Nevada Forest
Oatmeal Milk & Honey
Soy Candles ~
A coworker gave me some orange peel and glass containers to make her sister some Essential Orange soy candles to take back with her to Czechoslovakia. Below is my “high tech” candle making operation and the finished candles. I made her some Essential Lavender candles with lavender from my garden.
Boy & Critters ~
Had lunch with my mom, sister, bil, and their kiddos yesterday. The boy wanted to show me his loose tooth. Calling him Shark-Boy as the permanent teeth are already up shoving the baby tooth forward looking like a snaggletooth. Gotta love the hook the nose pic ~ 🙂
Here’s a dragonfly that was next to our table at the park yesterday ~
Pumpkins & Sunflowers ~
So…by now I assume you know I love pumpkins and sunflowers. Here are more pictures! Imagine that! 🙂 Taken this morning in my yard…was killing time waiting for the primary voting polls to open just down the street.
