Sights while geocaching around town

Spent yesterday geocaching around UNR and Spanish Springs, just wanted to share a few of the non-geocaching photographs I took.

Just click on the photographs to enlarge them.

Basque Monument and downtown Reno…the day started cold, damp and breezy.  My fingers and nose were cold for the first five geocaches.

The early morning grey chill opened up to a bright sunny late morning and afternoon!  I headed out to Spanish Springs to collect more geocaches…below are a few sparrows that kept me company along the way.

There’s an old ranch out in Spanish Springs…this is the part that they haven’t turned into a housing development yet…I’m hoping they never do. Great place to walk around with your dogs, bird watch, and geocache!

Galena Creek Jones Whites Creek Trail

Easter Day we decided to take a short hike at Galena Creek Park…we’ve been on the trail before but could never find the Jones Creek Loop (only a 1.7 mile loop)…we always keep going North and a tad East.

We parked at the Jones Creek Trailhead and ended up at the Whites Creek Trail intersection before turning back…started too late in the day and didn’t take enough water to hike 9.2 miles (our hike ended up being 5 miles round trip). Lots of people and dogs were out and about, some on mountain bikes.

Friday’s Rambles ~ 10 February 2012

* Yea! It’s Friday! 🙂 Payday too. Now if only the IRS will hurry up and direct deposit my tax return.

* My tripod I bought off of Amazon FINALLY arrived. After ordering it on 1/31 it left Allentown, PA on 2/2, then it went to Martinsburg, WV for a few days, then to Sacramento, CA for a few more days until heading over the Sierra to Reno where it sat somewhere for 2 days before being delivered yesterday. Sheesh. I now have an AgfaPhoto 72″ Pro Tripod (only $18.99)…looks nice and it’s nice and smooth.

* I’ve finished hand-piecing SIX of the 111 6.5″ blocks of the Farmer’s Wife Quilt. Using Denyse Schmidt’s Hope Valley fabric.

* I think I’ve found the pattern I’ll use for my Kate Spain’s Terrain ~ Sticks & Bricks (designer Amy Walsh of Blue Underground Studios)…I found it in the current issue of American Patchwork & Quilting. It’s simple and will show off the beautiful designs of Terrain.

* This morning’s moon.

* Book Reviews on Barnes & Noble ~ RANT! Why do they allow idiots to review books? Tell me! What does the following have to do with the book The Snow Child, a novel by Eowyn Ivey?!

2/7/12 Anonymous (5 stars) MUSTAR Just dont let it happen again. * she stalks home *
2/7/12 Anonymous (1 star) WARRIORS Ok….*leaves* Skystar
2/8/12 Anonymous (5 stars) ICEFANG… Hey, yeah it is Snowstar. Do you remember me? I was your mate and leader, I don’t know if I can trust you or not.
2/7/12 Anonymous (5 stars) ICEFANG TO ICEFLAME Thank you… and Fuzzyclaw says thank you for killing the badger.
2/5/12 Anonymous (5 stars) JAYHEART May i join? Im a muscular jet black tom w\ice blue eyes.
2/5/12 Anonymous (5 stars) TO TOM Its tawnypelt and my real name is victoria but call me tori
2/5/12 Anonymous (5 stars) RIVERSONG To tawnypelt: I was here first!! To tom: my name is river song
2/10/12 Anonymous (5 stars) To SNOWSTAR ICEFANG DIED IN BATTLE WITH A DARK CAT. Im so sorry. It was deathstar

And then they should never allow “anonymous” to write a review, if you can’t own up to your own words then don’t say them at all. Also they shouldn’t allow someone to leave a star rating WITHOUT writing a few words down about the book. If you read the bloody book and rated it, then leave something behind.

* Gotta get to work now. 🙂 Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Floral Friday ~ Amaryllis

🙂 I missed Wordless Wednesday so I’m making up a Floral Friday! This is an an Amaryllis that one of my faculty members gave me in February of this year. She orders all of her bulbs from Holland. The pot holds two bulbs and I have three sets of four flowers.

It’s blooming now!

They’re beautiful, no?! Red with a greenish-cream background.

Monday Rambles ~ 5 April 2010

SNOW! It’s cold and grey and there’s SNOW on the ground…again!

He’s not really has happy as he seems.

Mark your calendar! It’s May 22nd this year.

Finished the Jelly Bean block…will turn it into Ben Franklin Crafts after work today.

Also made another block, but I’m not sure this one will fly as the rules say the Jelly Bean fabric has to be the dominate fabric…it’s sorta 50/50 in this block.

Some pictures of Leo and Lucy…more Leo than Lucy. 🙂

What you can’t see is that both are lying on top of the heater vent…with the heat blasting.

Leo watching the birds on Saturday…before the snow.

Oooohhhh…he’s got a snoot full of snot in that one nostril!

For Today ~ 3 March 2010 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 3 March 2010

Outside My Window… A bit of sun, cold, storm sitting on the Sierra, no snow yet! YEAH.

I am thinking… what an ass the provost is to even THINK about closing the College of Agriculture at UNR…sounds like he has an axe to grind.

I am thankful for… my job, even if this environment it stressful, to say the least.

From the kitchen… Not sure…last night was carnitas tacos, night before that was stuffed chicken…maybe just soup and grilled sandwiches.

I am wearing… Jeans, tennies, and a long-sleeved burgundy shirt, hair in ponytail.

I am creating… binding the Recess quilt. And have been thinking what I want to do with the Lila Tueller Eden fabric I have.

I am going… to disconnect someone’s liquid nitrogen tank from their freezer if someone from their lab does not come over and stop the bloody beeping alarm on it!

I am reading… Back to Basics Traditional Kitchen Wisdom ~ Techniques and Recipes for Living a Simpler, more Sustainable Life.

I am hoping… My constant wish ~ That everyone that is looking for a job, finds one.

I am hearing… The ice machine and Beep Beep Beeep BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP beep beeep beeep beep beeeeeeeep from a Liquid Nitrogen tank that is low.

Around the house… is a yard full of birds that I forgot to feed before I went to work. Sorry guys.

One of my favorite things… Sharing fabric finds with April… 😉 thank goodness for IM…LOOKIE AT WHAT I FOUND!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… not sure. Finished our taxes, will be finishing some quilts, go to the library, start some seeds for the garden.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

Goodies from Ireland & Scotland

Mom is back from her trip to Ireland and Scotland…left the 1st and back 24th September.

Stopped by yesterday and plugged in her camera to the tv to watch a slide show…big sigh. I want to go.

Am sharing a few of my gifts she brought back (Belleek is still in transit).

A BEAUTIFUL hand knitted sweater by Jean Cooke Designs in wool…thistle/heather color. It’s a wrap like with a snap on one side and a cool button on the other.

A pair of Donegal socks ~ 100% wool.

A silver necklace from the Wicklow Mountains ~

A pair of Thistle china cups by Luckenbooth of Scotland ~ which sort of looks like the same design of Duchess of England’s Thistle.

And an Irish Shamrock seed packet ~ I’ll have to find a pretty pot and try to grow them indoors.

And a wee bottle of Bushmill’s Black…me favorite whiskey. She and her friend broke into the other two bottles at the US Embassy in London while spending four hours taking care of Lynn’s lost passport.

For Today ~ 24 July 2009 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 24 July 2009

Outside My Window… Construction…they have the stairs in and are laying the metal down for the 4th floor. Blue sky. Looks like it will be another hot day.

I am thinking… It’s Friday again. None too soon either. Been somewhat depressed this week. Wish my husband would find work. I need to shut/lock the office for 2 hours so people can’t get in…put the phones to voice mail…and purge files. This place needs a good cleaning. I’m tired of people waiting for the last minute to do things, especially when it comes to people getting a pay check, and then expect me to do it yesterday.

I am thankful for… my job (well not today I’m not), my family, my house.

From the kitchen… I have some Hungarian peppers in the garden that are almost stuffing size. More beets to pickle.

I am wearing… Dark brown crop pants, tan t-shirt, and Betulas.

I am creating… nothing.

I am going… work on my sister’s quilt. Really and truly. I’m going to just turn on my ceiling fan, shut the door, put on some music and sew.

I am reading… I haven’t been reading the last few nights…BBC America has Torchwood: Children of Earth on every night this week. I LOVE Torchwood. Which reminds me, Dr. Who is new this Sunday night ~ Dr. Who: Planet of the Dead.

I am hoping… My constant wish ~ That everyone that is looking for a job, finds one.

I am hearing… Phone ringing, faculty pacing back and forth while talking on the phone, next door office, construction behind me, a/c just kicking on.

Around the house… My garden needs to be watered.

One of my favorite things… Quiet. No people around. I’m very content to be by myself most of the times.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… It’s Friday and the weekend is supposed to be in the 100’s…I’m going to hibernate and sew.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

Dunluce Castle, Antrim County, Northern Ireland….the one place I want to go before I die.

For Today ~ 04 May 2009 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 4 May 2009

Outside My Window… Couldy and grey sky. Looks like it still may want to rain a bit. A big ole crane! The construction guys are putting steel framing into place. The two buildings are going up fast!

I am thinking… I need to take something for my headache. I think the stress is getting to me as my throat is starting to hurt a bit. 😦

I am thankful for… my job, even though it’s been crazy here.

From the kitchen… We had leftover porkchops and rice last night. Tonight I’m going to make the Rhubarb Orange Almond Cake that is on the Mennonite Girls Can Cook blog.

I am wearing… Blue jeans, 3/4 sleaved maroon shirt, tennis shoes, hair pulled back into a ponytail.

I am creating… Nothing…

I am going… To run over to the Dean’s Office…paper work, always paper work.

I am reading… The Secret Life of Bees still…almost done.

I am hoping… My constant wish ~ That everyone that is looking for a job, finds one.

I am hearing… The construction guys pumping concrete to make the foundation of the breeze way that will contect our building to the new buildings.

Around the house… dust bunnies.

One of my favorite things… Snuggled deep in my quilts listening to the rain on the back patio that has a corrugated metal roof.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… work, sleep, worry about work, water my yard and garden, work, more worrying, pray to God to take the worrying away.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

Some of the books I got at the Friends of the Library sale on Sunday…a bag of books for $6.

The Simple Woman is the original home of The Simple Woman's Daybook.

The Simple Woman’s Daybook will take place each Monday.

Here’s how to take part:

1. Write up and publish your journal page using the questions/picture ideasI have listed below onto your blog. Be as descriptive as you can! This makes it more interesting to your readers. (You may cut and paste them for the purpose to participate in The Simple Woman’s Daybook.)

2. Copy the “permalink” from your “The Simple Woman’s Daybook” post, not the link to the front page of your blog. This will make it much easier for others to find instead of looking through the entire list of entries at your blog for your “daybook”. This will save time for all of us.

3. Come back here and add your permalink to Mister Linky.

Tried Two New Recipes ~ Burek (Borek) & Chocolate Pie

Tried a couple of new recipes this weekend ~ one from Laila and one from The Pioneer Woman.

First…let’s do dessert! 🙂 Always go for the dessert first…especially when it has chocolate in it!

Here is the printable recipe for The Pioneer Woman’s Chocolate Pie…it’s pretty simple with not many ingredients.

I used her recipe for pie crust…I had made up one of her apple pies last month and stuck the rest of the pie crust into the freezer for a later date.

The only thing I would say is it takes more than 45 seconds to melt the chocolate in the microwave. I ended up just putting it over a small pot of hot water to melt it. Pulled out my Kitchenaid for this pie…added an egg and then walked away to watch the Friday Night Fights on ESPN. Added an egg and went back to tv…that goes on for four eggs. Until….

ONLY BAD THING ABOUT THIS IS YOU HAVE TO WAIT TWO FLIPPING HOURS BEFORE EATING IT! Big sigh…when she tells you to “scrape every last speck of it out of the bowl”….DON’T LISTEN TO HER! Leave some for you to lick lick lick! That should hold you until the looooooong two hours is up. 😀

Next ~ onto Laila’s recipe. I made this up for dinner last night. Very, very, very tasty. Laila's Ground Meat Phyllo Pie "Burek"

Her recipe calls for:

one package of phyllo dough (box holds two packages, use whole box!)
1 pound of minced meat ~ I used chili cut minced beef
2 TBSP butter
1 small onion, chopped (I used a large yellow onion)
1/2 cup choped bell peppers (I probably ended up with 3/4 cup of chopped red, yellow and orange bell peppers, don’t like the green ones.)
1 TBSP Tomato paste
1/2 tsp Allspice
Salt and Pepper to taste
3/4 Cup milk
(I added Feta Cheese…had some that I needed to use up, figured it’s good with Spinach pie, why not with this?!)

Melt butter and saute onions, add meat until all cooked. Add peppers and mix. Then add allspice, salt and pepper, and tomato paste. Set aside.

Melt 1/2-3/4 cup of butter. Brush bottom of pan with butter and add the first sheet of phyllo (1-2 sheets), brush with butter and keep doing this until 1/2 phyllo is used.

Add meat mixture.

Continue with phyllo and butter until the last is used. Do not butter the top layer. You pour the 3/4 cup milk on top of the whole kit-n-kaboodle. The milk will give you a moist flaky crust that is easier to cut.

She says to use a medium oven for 30 minutes…I baked the pie at 375F for 30 minutes.

Cut and eat! I made up a salad of sliced cucumbers and red onions with garlic red wine vinegar.
