Galena Creek Jones Whites Creek Trail

Easter Day we decided to take a short hike at Galena Creek Park…we’ve been on the trail before but could never find the Jones Creek Loop (only a 1.7 mile loop)…we always keep going North and a tad East.

We parked at the Jones Creek Trailhead and ended up at the Whites Creek Trail intersection before turning back…started too late in the day and didn’t take enough water to hike 9.2 miles (our hike ended up being 5 miles round trip). Lots of people and dogs were out and about, some on mountain bikes.

Plants are starting to bloom along the trail.

Next time I’d like to start earlier, take a lot more water, and head west to Church’s Pond.

For Today ~ 06 May 2013 ~ A Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 06 May 2013

Outside My Window… Grey windy morning…the sun is trying to peek out between some clouds to the east, black snow clouds up in the mountains to the west.

I am thinking… I wonder about the story of an elderly gentleman that I see at the bus stop near campus every morning around 6:30 am. Not sure why, but he makes me smile when I spot him there…and worried when I don’t see him. He has a Billy Connolly look to him, only thinner…same wild white hair and facial hair too.

I am thankful for… That the infection on the left side of my face has finally calmed down (I looked like I went a round with a boxer). After 10 days of antibiotics, many lancing of the gums, and a few refills of Percocet…I may be able to open my mouth all the way by next weeks root canal appointment.

From the kitchen… I took some chicken out of the freezer that’s been marinading in McCormick’s Grill Mates tomato garlic and basil. I buy boneless chicken breasts in bulk…get different grill mates marinades and put two pieces of chicken in a gallon ziplock, put the marinade package, then pop them in the freezer. In the morning, before work, I place one on the counter where my husband will stick into the frig after he has his coffee and goes about his day.

I am wearing… Jeans, blue waffle thermal shirt, and sandals.

I am creating… Absolutely nothing for the last three weeks. My head was hurting WAY too much. I did pull out my batik Grandma’s Flower Garden and made about 10 hexies, but that was it.

I am going… put the kettle on for a pot of hot tea.

I am reading… hiking trail maps. 🙂 Looking at areas around town to go hiking/walks since we don’t have much money to leave town right now.

I am hoping… that my friend April had a wonderful visit with her Mom and Dad last week…and a very safe flight home today.

I am hearing… the traffic outside. People using their card keys to get into the building.

Around the house… Deck needs cleaning after the wind storm yesterday…lots of tree droppings. Inside is cleaned.

One of my favorite things… Listening to Van Morrison on Pandora while it rains.

A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week… Not really sure.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you… A few pictures that I took up at Galena Creek…before the rain hit.

Take My HUSBAND…please? with sugar on top?

Big Sigh.

So, as some of you may know, my husband is unemployed…and driving me crazy. It’s hard to live with a bi-polar, depressed man who can not stand living in the duplex we are renting. Every day it’s “what’s the good word about the house?” (((insert Michelle banging head against desk)))

Anyhoo…I FINALLY got him to volunteer his time while he’s out looking for work. He now goes to the Nevada Food Bank on the two days he gets the car (it’s north of town and the truck gets crappy mileage), and he’s in the process of Volunteer Orientation at the VA Hospital!

He also has been signing US (notice US and not HIM) up for things to do after I GET OFF OF WORK! I want some down time…some ME TIME…some SEWING time. Nope. I’m not saying I’m not enjoying the outings (and to be honest, some of them were my suggestions), it’s just I really would like some me time. Also time to get household chores done. A nap. A beer.

So far a few of the things we did this week:

* Walked downtown to the old Riverside to watch the lighting of a sculpture (borrowed art from Burning Man).

* Walked to Sundance Bookstore’s grand opening in their new building (awesome old house on the corner of California and Plumas/Sierra), then through their “backyard” to the Nevada Museum of Art to listen to Richmond Fontaine (author Willy Vlautin’s band).

* Took a LEAVE NO TRACE BEHIND class from Washoe County Park Service at Galena Creek Park. Taught by Ranger Jerry from Davis Creek Park. Very cool information…some a bit extreme (like pack your crap out).

* “Along High Sierra Trails with Mark Vollmer and Mike White” talk with slides at REI.
Description: Join our own REI team members Mark Vollmer and Mike White on an exploration of the “Range of Light” from Yosemite going south. Mark Vollmer is an award winning photographer whose has chronicled the Sierras in sight and sound. Mike White, also an award winner, has authored trail guides for much of the Sierra as well as Northern Nevada.

Definitely want to get the book Afoot & Afield in Reno-Tahoe: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide by Mike White.

I did get some sewing in late last Friday night while my husband was asleep ~ need to get the top sewn now. Worked on ps i quilt’s quilt along.

Lucy got tired of supervising my work ~
