A Rambling Tuesday ~ 27 May 2014

Sort of a ramble today ~ Lots of pictures.

I received my craft swap today! A beautiful scarf hand-spun & dyed & knitted by a graduate student in my department. It’s soooo soft! Did I say it was BEAUTIFUL? 🙂 Will be getting out my Scottish Thistle pins! In exchange for the scarf, I made the lap quilt in the previous post.

We stopped by Boca (near the train tracks and Truckee River) on the way home from spending the day up near Hobart Mills.

It’s been warming up here in Reno/Sparks…and being upstairs just makes it hotter. This was Leo yesterday (with windows open and fan on) while I was piecing mini quilts.

Using Jeni Baker’s Nordika I made up a bunch of 1.25″ (finished size) HST’s…making a few mini quilts…and I do mean MINI…will be approximately 8″. The three on the left are finished, still working on the right two. Then will need to quilt and bind.

Another Quilt Top Finished Waiting to be Quilted

I’ve had a very lovely Brother Innov-IS NX-800 at Windy Moon Quilts waiting for me to pay her off and take her home. With the help of my dearest friend, APRIL, and me penny-pinching since February, I should be able to bring her home next week!

Which is a good thing as I have FOUR quilt tops that I’ve pieced on my wonderful work-horse, the Singer 301 Long Bed. While I love piecing quilts with the 301, I don’t like quilting with it.

I finished my latest quilt top last night. I had a lot of 1930 reproduction feed sack fabric squares leftover from the WONKY STAR quilt along so I decided to make them into HST’s (half square triangles).

Diamond/Square Dance

Diamond/Square Dance

I’m just calling it a diamond pattern, but I’ve seen it called Square Dance too. Fun and easy to make. I’ve lots more HST’s left to make another quilt top, been looking at my PINTEREST quilt board trying to decide which design to use next.

Just one more picture to throw at you ~ my quilting partner, Lucy, plumb tuckered out from helping me arrange the HST on the design board.

Quilting UFO’s becoming not-so-ufoie

I have a “few” quilt tops that I’ve decided I despartely need to get quilted and out of the house…well, a few out of the house. BECAUSE I HAVE SO MANY PRETTY FABRICS WAITING TO BECOME QUILT TOPS…and then start the whole thing all-over again. 🙂

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*** Ocean Quilt Top ~ wow…I just saw the date when I finished THIS top! August 2010! Good Grief. Well! It’s quilted and the binding is sewn on and ready to be hand-stitched to the backside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*** Spring Window Quilt :::hanging head in shame::: THIS quilt top was finished in April 2010. I’ve got it sandwiched and have started in on the quilting.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*** psiquilt quilt along Four Patch ~ I finished THIS top in July. It’s next in line after Spring Window to be sandwiched and quilted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*** In a Jiffy Ric-Rac Quilt ~ Next in line is THIS quilt top that I used Camille Roskelley’s Ric-Rac pattern. I finished the top in June of this year. Will back it with the lime green Kona cotton.

A quilt for Evan Henry

We have a new baby in my extended family…Evan Henry (my brother-in-law’s sister’s baby boy).

I finished the half square triangle quilt top…added two batik borders, one (the biggest) is a beauty…Paradise Barbados and the smaller one (also the binding) Tonga royal iron scrollwork. It’s backed by a pretty fuzzy flannel ~ Ice Garden by Maywood Studios.

It’s 44″x52″…so it’ll last him a very long time.

(changing photos! Mom came back with it all washed…outside shot much better)

For Today ~ 25 March 2011 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 25 March 2011.

Outside My Window… Snow on the ground , ice, snow, more ice, snow. wind. more snow.

I am thinking… no more snow. no more snow. no more snow.

I am thankful for… :::scrowling::: I may or may not come back to this one.

From the kitchen… nothing. We’re going out.

I am wearing… Jeans, UNR hooded pullover sweatshirt, tennies, hair in ponytail.

I am creating… two quilts…a hobo quilt and a baby quilt using leftover half triangle squares from my ocean quilt.

I am going… turn on my heater under my desk soon.

I am reading… am flipping through Mark Lipinski’s Fabric Trends magazine.

I am hoping… that the snow stops. and the wind. yes, definitely that the wind stops.

I am hearing… sirens (stupid people driving too fast for the icy conditions).

Around the house… floor needs vacuuming…boy does it need vacuuming.

One of my favorite things… sunshine on my shoulders makes me haaaappppiee…sunshine in my eeeeeyyyyeeeessss can make me cry. sunshine on the waaaaaattttter looks sooooooo luvvviley….sunshine amost aaallllways makes me hiiiigh!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… quilt and curse the snow.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

I finished my Ocean Quilt Top – HST Quilt

I took a half day off work yesterday. Had to be home for a repairman to fix a cracked window, and after he left…I grabbed my quilt top and headed over to WINDY MOON to find some fabric for the borders. The ladies there are always willing to help find the perfect fabric. 🙂

Then they asked if I was going to have one of the longarm quilters there quilt it for me…told them I don’t have that type of money. BUT! I do have a Janome 1600P-DB that my inlaws gave me for Christmas that I have not used yet. So I will bring it in for Donna to go over with me the basics of FMQ.

They were getting busy in the shop, so I headed on home to my wee sewing space and started in on finishing my quilt. We moved to a smaller house/duplex in July, so I do not have a dedicated sewing room anymore. I have my sewing machine set up in the corner of our guest room; my fabric hutch is also in there; I put nails up on the closet to hook the design wall up; ironing board goes down and back up…but then I have to go down the hall, through the kitchen, down the stairs into the basement to my cutting table! Let me tell you…I get my excerise in when making a quilt. Up and Down, Up and Down…Up and half way Down, back Up (forgot the rotary!), back down.

My first quilt I ever made is on the bed…the last quilt I’m making on the wall. 🙂

Next ~ will have to figure out what I want to do for the backing. Just one fabric or mix of all? Not sure yet.

My Ocean Quilt ~ Half Square Triangles

Still not sure which way my Ocean quilt will ebb to…(I know, I know)…It’ll come to me sooner or later.

I really need to get my design wall up! Last night, in a pinch, I taped up some flannel I had.

Here are two ideas that I was playing with using the few pieces that I sewed yesterday evening while listening to Monday Night Football (FALL IS COMING!!! FALL IS COMING!!!).

I think I’m leaning towards the design in the first picture.

I’m just making a huge amount of half square triangles…taking 6″ squares, drawing a line down the middle of one, then sewing a 1/4″ seam down both sides of the line. Cut down the middle, press, and you have two 1/2 square triangles. Luckily a 1/4″ is right down the middle of the left side of the Janome’s walking foot!
