New Quilt in the making ~ Moda Hideaway fabric

I’ve a few projects that I’m juggling at the moment…the ‘beast’ (as my friend April calls it) pinwheel quilt, that I ripped out all of the quilting I did on it, is ready for requilting. This time in straight lines! 🙂 The Underground Railroad quilt is down in the basement ready for basting. And my newest project…making lots of geese using Moda’s Hideaway and Kona Solid White.

Am using a Moda Bakeshop ‘recipe’ ~ Geese in the Park ~ that uses two layer cakes, one print and one solid. I had a layer cake in Hideaway and am using yardage of Kona for the solid pieces.

First you pick out 27 pieces from the layer cake and size to 9-1/4″ square (I chose more as I want the quilt a bit longer 72″). Using the solid fabric you cut out 4-7/8″ squares. Arrange the solids on both corners and draw a line diagonally across and pin.

Sew 1/4″ on both sides of the line, then cut on line.

Next you press open. (Sorry about the next picture…very out of focus! Didn’t realize it until I started editing the pictures.) I like to press the seams open, not to one side…but if you are one of those that press to one side, make it press towards the printed fabric. 🙂

Take another 4-7/8″ square and place it in the v-corner of the print fabric, draw a line down the middle and sew 1/4″ on both sides, cut on line.

Ta-Da! You now have four honkers that are approximately 4-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.

Windy Moon Quilt Shop’s Tent Sale Buys ~ 2010

Just wanted to share what I bought at Windy Moon’s Tent Sale this morning. 🙂

I picked up backings for two quilt tops:

My Water/Ocean quilt…I bought more of the batik that I made one the borders with:

For my Spring Window quilt, more of Lila Tueller’s Eden (LOVE LOVE LOVE that fabric line!!!!)

A bag loaded with fat quarters, 1/2 yard, 14″x14″ squares of 1930 Reproduction fabrics!

And last, but not least, a few bunch of 1/2 yards of Sandy Gervais’ Fresh Squeezed by Moda:

New Quilt Blocks ~ Nine Patch Variations

I’ve been looking at different quilting blogs and have come across two that have great tutorials…in which these two have caught my eye. Cluck Cluck Sew’s Disappearing Nine Patch and Oh, Fransson’s Crazy Nine-Patch.

I really like the blocks! Now I just have to figure out how I want to place them into a quilt. 🙂

For the Disappearing Nine Patch, I used two Moda’s Charm Packs that I’ve had for some time…Recess by American Jane. It makes a big block…about 13″.

For the wonky Crazy Nine Patch I picked out 9 different fabrics in the Cheep Talk line from Connecting Threads that I had bought months ago.

This was a fun block to make…although it was a bit hard to cut through the last two cuts. This makes an 8″ block.

I have five 1/2 yard fabrics from the Woodland Bloom line by Lila Tueller for Moda..I want more. Not exactly sure what I want to make with it yet, but I do know I’d like more fabrics from that line. They are VERY pretty. 🙂

UPDATE! I found two more pieces in this line here in town…now I have to turn to the internet.

And lookie! Sun hitting Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain this morning! A teaser from Mom Nature…as we’re getting more rain and snow tomorrow. Picture was taken looking out from the building here at work.

Still Working on Quilts ~ variations of Thimble Blossoms’ pint-sized

Well…I finished most of two quilt tops over the weekend. I need to get the fabric for the borders and backing.

I used the patterns from Thimble Blossoms ‘Pint-Sized’…with a few changes.

I finished the 80 3.5″ blocks…the top is 25’x31′ right now.

I went to the quilt shop where I bought the Moda Hushabye Charm pack and found out that they only had the Moda Bake Shop pieces, not bolts of fabric! OY! Couldn’t find it anywhere in Reno and Sparks…so I just ordered from Hancock’s of Paducah online for the border and backing fabric. ON SALE! $4.98/yard. Hoping to have it by Thursday or Friday…will finish the quilt over the weekend.

Next quilt…the pint-sized rectangle. I had planned on doing this for a group challenge using the colors: Brown, Pink, Cream, Turquoise. I chose BRIGHT fabrics…cut into 1.5″ strips in different lengths.

Here it is…not sure which fabric I plan on using as the border. Also not sure if I’m going to use it for the challenge. I may quilt it up and give it to the Kids Kottage.

Right now I just have them hanging up on the wall. I go into the room and just look at them…the border fabric will come to me, hopefully sooner than later.

Cutting out new quilt using Moda Hushabye Charm Pack

I dropped in at Windy Moon Quilt shop after work yesterday looking for one thing and ended up with something else…a pattern that uses charm packs, which I already had at home.

Thimble Blossoms ‘pint-sized’ #129 designed by Camille Roskelley.

The quilt block itself is also known as Scrapy Patch, Whirlygiggles, Scrapy Cartwheels, Pinwheels, Whirligigs and so on.

I took out my charm packs (5″ squares) that I had and chose Moda’s Hushabye by Tula Pink….blues, pinks, greens and browns.

First I cut all the charms into four 2.5″ squares…along with an equal amount of neutral fabric, which I have many yards of ~ an ivory on ivory print.

Then you just cut and sew as instructed until you get a 3.5″ block looking like the wee one below:

One down, 79 more blocks to go! LOL!

When all put together, the quilt will be 40″ x 45″…great size for a baby quilt or wall hanging.

Materials needed for this quilt are as follows:

1 Charm pack (or 40 5×5 squares)
3/4 yard neutral fabric
3/4 yard for outer border
1/3 yard for inner border
1/2 yard binding
1-1/2 yards backing
batting
