McCarran Ranch ~ Snap Shots along the Truckee River ~ 19 January 2014

Just a few photographs that I took while walking the trails at the McCarran Ranch of the Nature Conservancy of Nevada, Sunday, January 19th.

It was a sunny and warm (56F), a beautiful day for a hike along the river.

For Today ~ 14 March 2013 ~ Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY … 14 March 2013

Outside My Window… High grey clouds, birds on an empty bird feeder, huge (10′ high 30′ wide) pile of mulch.

I am thinking… a certain vindictive family member really needs to reflect on who it is that actually has the anger problem.

I am thankful for… once again and always…my friend April.

From the kitchen… I steamed artichokes last night…not really sure what I’ll make tonight.

I am wearing… Jeans, tennies, olive green cotton shirt.

I am creating… I have all 30 blocks of my Denyse Schmidt quilt finished and 20 of them are sewn together (top four rows). I have two more rows to add before the quilt top is complete.

Top four rows all sewn together...have 10 more blocks to sew together into rows.

Top four rows all sewn together…have 10 more blocks to sew together into rows.

I am going… dig through a few more of my craft books and put them up onto ebay.

I am reading… All Roads Lead to Austen: A Year-long Journey with Jane by Amy Smith…still reading this. Up to chapter nine now…am enjoying this read.

I am hoping… that the neighbor who left on Monday morning comes home soon. He left his alarm on so it comes on EVERY MORNING at 3am and doesn’t go off until 4:15am.

I am hearing… the traffic outside. Train going by.

Around the house… the trees are starting to bud out. We set a record high yesterday (77F).

One of my favorite things… Pretty fabric. New music. Old books. Good friends.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… Keep on quilting. St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Here is a picture thought I’d share with you…

The McCarran Ranch Preserve ~ Nature Conservancy in Nevada with slideshow

Last Saturday we drove a few miles east of Reno/Sparks to the Patrick Exit on 80 to the trailhead of the McCarran Ranch Preserve. I saw online that the trail was now open to the public!

The McCarran Ranch was homesteaded in 1862 and encompassed approximately 2600 acres in the Truckee River canyon east of Sparks. Many, many years ago the Corp of Engineers straightened the river out…luckily for us, The Nature Conservancy has been rectifying that. In 2002 they created wetlands and riffles and started revegetation and invasive weed control on 20 acres. In 2006 they added another 100 acres. Last year they opened up a stretch of the river to the public between Lockwood and 102 Ranch (USA Parkway Exit).

A third of the way through our walk we came upon a bunch of people working on a wetlands project near the river…planting willows and grading the slopes. Met Martin, Volunteer Coordinator for the Nature Conversancy in Nevada, he said the volunteers were from Truckee Meadows Community College’s Natural Resources class. After crossing a bridge to the north side of the river we met up with Martin again at the Ranch House’s amphitheater where he fed us lunch, gave us extra water and lots of information on the project! They couldn’t have picked a better person for that job! Thanks, Martin!

We continued east on the north side of the river where we crossed the train trestle where I prayed I wouldn’t end up like a flatten penny on the tracks…but the fishermen where doing it, so I ran across the plank way. I’d probably loop back the way I came the next time I’m there…which will be as soon as the trees start leafing…and in the fall when they start to change colors. 🙂

Birds spotted on our walk besides the sparrows and finches were Kingfisher, Bald Eagle, swallows.

I took lots of pictures so I put them into a slideshow. Hopefully it plays for you…and with the music too (which, if you hear it, is The Roan Inish Theme from the movie Secret of Roan Inish).

Thursday’s Rambles ~ 1 March 2012

Some fabrics I pulled out of my stash for a 60×60 quilt someone wants me to make them. Just has to be blue and grey with the state of Nevada somewhere on it. I have a design in mind. 🙂 After seeing them in the picture, I’m not sure about the two in the middle of the pack. I’ll have to go pick up a few FQ’s from Windy Moon.

A small project I’m working on using Lauren & Jessi Jung’s Flora fabric…using English paper piecing hexies.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saw this on the way to work…looks like someone was drunk and didn’t realize that you can’t barrel through two work buildings and go down the hill to the road.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tuesday’s sunrise with a big ole fog bank….

Today is windy with more snow on the way…just like yesterday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last Saturday after driving up to Pyramid Lake we came back home via Wadsworth to 80…just before Reno is Lockwood where we spied a new park. They’ve re-dug the riverbed in that area, un-doing the damage by the Corp of Engineers so many years ago…now the Truckee River flows through lots of meanders. The fishies are a lot happier too.
We rented a great movie the other night. The Way, an Emilio Estevez movie staring his dad, Martin Sheen. Highly recommend it.
Thursday’s Rambles ~ 04 August 2011
* T-Minus 8 Days for the START OF MOVING!
* I’ll probably maim or kill my husband before that. 🙂 Men…I swear.
* On a whim I found a 1″ Hexagon template and printed out about 10 sheets on heavier card stock paper (not sure why we had it at work here, I’ve been here almost 10 years and we’ve never used it). Watched the English Paper Piecing video on Connecting Threads…So THAT’S HOW THEY DO THAT!
I cut out some 2.5″ squares of my 1930’s reproduction fabrics to give it a whirl…I’m officially on the path of destruction now.
* Jen at Musings from Main Street had a photo contest and I was a winner! LOL! Two of us won $25 gift cards at Amazon. Spent a long time trying to figure out what I wanted. I’m saving my money for a Barnes & Noble 1st Edition Nook (sorry Amazon Kindle)…so I couldn’t buy any ebooks, couldn’t decide on any music or real book, then I stumbled onto fabric! They sell fabric on Amazon! I’ve been on a fabric diet since my husband lost his job. Guess what I got?! THREE YARDS OF FABRIC! From Fabric.com’s amazon storefront
I got one yard each of Amy Butler’s Midwest Modern Martini Green, Midwest Modern Garden Maze Green, and Daisy Chain Kaleidoscope Dots Olive.
Thank you Jen!
* I so want to make some pickles! But will have to wait until we move. I’ve packed my canning supplies. Waaaaaaaaaahhhh!
* Going to have to hook up with Beth so we can float the Truckee River. It’s been really hot (not has hot as the rest of the country…but hot enough for me).
* Do you all remember the MASH episode where Radar, Hawkeye, Trapper, and Margaret did their version of My Blue Heaven? With Henry conducting?
Well…while working on the Hexies last night…I had to get up and belt out the song like Margaret! WHEN WHIP-POOR-WILLS CAAAAAALLLL AND EV’NING IS NIGH! (Gotta get those dance moves in too!) Come on…you can DO IT! 🙂
* Then I cried while singing with John Denver ~ I’m Sorry. Then sobbed when Vince Gill & Ricky Skaggs (video with Alison Krauss, LOVE HER!) sang Go Rest High On That Mountain. Good grief. I turned off the music and switched it to Hong Kong Phooey on Boomerang. 🙂
* Another picture of one of my favorite valleys….Sierra Valley. Looking WSW between Chilcoot and Frenchman’s Lake. Haying time.
* To Dean Heller: WTF were you thinking you ARSEHOLE?! Just remember elections are coming up and I can’t wait to vote your arse out of office! Have a nice day! 🙂
